Cairo to Fayoum 3 day bird watching tour

Escape the bustle of Cairo and discover one of Egypt’s richest natural habitats on a 3-day bird watching tour to Fayoum Oasis. This journey takes you to the most important birding sites in the region - Wadi El Rayan, Lake Qarun, and the wetlands of Tunis Village - areas renowned for their scenic landscapes and remarkable diversity of resident and migratory birds.

Where to watch birds in Fayoum

Fayoum is a unique ecosystem where desert, lakes, and fertile farmland meet, creating ideal conditions for birdlife throughout the year. From graceful grebes and herons along the shores to waders, terns, and seasonal migrants resting in the reedbeds, every stop offers excellent opportunities for observation and photography.

Wetlands are probably the most important habitat for birds in Egypt. one of the best wetlands to spot rare birds are Wadi El-Rayan protected area and Qarun Lake Nature Reserve in Fayoum oasis. These are the best places to see herons, egrets, Purple Gallinule, Painted snipe, waders and pied Kingfisher. Wetland fringes, especially where there are bushes and reeds, will be host to many other species as well.

Our three day tour to Fayoum oasis is designed for all bird watchers either novice or advanced, so you get the most observations possible during your tour to the unique and picturesque areas of Fayoum oases.

Day 1: Shores of Lake Qarun

If you arrive at Cairo International Airport we can pick up you from there for the tour, if you are already in Cairo and want to go bird watching to Fayoum for some days we are happy to pick you up from your location in Cairo. We will move from Cairo around 6 am to reach the oasis at a perfect time for catching early birds. Fayoum is the nearest oasis to Cairo and is located just 100 km far from Giza pyramids.

Upon arrival in Fayoum we will head straight to shores of Lake Qarun for morning birdwatching around the wetlands of Tunis Village - a small oasis surrounded by the desert. Look out for Graceful Prinia, Pallid Goldfinch, Desert Wheatear, grey hypocolius, the pale rockfinch.

Afternoon visit to Qarun Lake Nature Reserve, the largest saltwater lake in Egypt. Look out for the black-necked grebe, the common tern, the marsh sandpiper, and the pygmy cormorant.

After the tour lets have lunch at a local restaurant and check in our cozy hotel. Free evening at your discretion as we have an early rise in the morning.

Day 2: Lake Qarun and Fayoum Countryside

Early morning start for a new bird watching adventure. After breakfast, transfer to the shores of Qarun Lake for a pleasant boat trip. This is one of the best birdwatching sites in Fayoum, especially early in the morning. Our morning Boat Trip on the Lake Qarun will take approximately 2 hours. Enjoy quiet observation, photography opportunities, and panoramic views of the desert surrounding the lake. Search for Great Crested Grebe and Little Grebe, Black-necked Grebe, Common terns and various gull species, Pygmy Cormorant, Herons and egrets along the reedbeds. Wading birds feeding along the shallow shores. Occasionally pelicans and migratory birds (seasonal).

In the afternoon we will continue our tour and take a gentle walk through the agricultural areas and villages around the oasis searching for Hoopoe, White Wagtail, Crested Lark, Desert Wheatear, Graceful Prinia, Cattle Egret around farms and fields. Kingfisher along irrigation canals. This walk also offers the opportunity to experience local rural life, traditional agriculture, and the peaceful landscape of the Fayoum Oasis.

Lunch in a local restaurant during the day and back to our hotel.

Day 3: Bird watching at Wadi El Rayan and the desert safari

Early departure to Wadi El-Rayan protected area - an area with two lakes and sand dunes. Birdwatching around the lakes and dunes. Species likely to be seen: Black-winged Stilt, White Pelican, Little Grebe, Marsh Harrier.

Visit to Mudawara Mountain and the surrounding desert areas for birdwatching and landscape photography. Look out for species such as black-winged stilt, the white pelican, the little grebe, the red-necked phalarope, and western marsh harrier.

After the tour we will get lunch at a local restaurant and transfer back to your hotel in Cairo.
