Wadi El Rayan is a protected area and a depression located in the Western Desert of Egypt, approximately 65 km southwest of the capital city, Cairo. It is situated between the cities of Fayoum and El Minya, in the Fayoum Oasis.
Wadi El Rayan is a relatively small protected area, covering a total area of approximately 175 square kilometers (67.5 square miles). It consists of two main lakes, Lake Qarun and Lake Moeris, which were created by the construction of a man-made canal in the 1990s. The area also includes a number of sand dunes, cliffs, and rocky formations, as well as important wetland habitats that support a diverse range of plant and animal species. Despite its relatively small size, Wadi El Rayan is an important conservation area and a popular destination for nature lovers and tourists visiting Egypt.
Wadi El Rayan is known for its beautiful waterfalls, which we will visit during out Wadi El-Rayan day tour from Cairo. Waterfalls of Wadi el-Rayan are actually a series of cascading rapids that flow between the two lakes, Lake Qarun and Lake Moeris. The waterfalls are formed by the runoff from agricultural drainage water, which is used to irrigate the surrounding farmland. The water cascades down a series of terraces and pools, creating a picturesque landscape that is popular with tourists and nature lovers.
We will take part in some water-based activities in the pools and lakes including a boat ride, explore the surrounding desert landscape on foot, visit Magic lake and Mudawara mountain.
