The museum is located in a luxurious building of exquisite neoclassical architecture. The building was originally built as a summer palace for the family of Zeinab Fahmy, the wife of a descendant of Mohammed Ali. After her death, the palace passed to her daughter, Princess Fatima Al-Zahra, who added the east wing to the building, connected to the rest of the building by a corridor.
The royal decorations exhibited inside the palace are true works of art. The museum includes about 11,500 artifacts that were once personal belongings and gifts belonging to the family and descendants of Mohammed Ali.
