Ramescium is a memorial temple of the great warrior Pharaoh Ramses II. This temple is called the “House of Millions of Years,” and is one of the largest and best-preserved temples of that era. It is here that the fallen colossus is located, which inspired Percy Bysshe Shelley to the poem Ozymandias. The plan of the temple is typical of the New Kingdom. Behind the pylons there are courtyards, and then a colonnade hall, with columns in the form of papyrus stems, and finally, a hall for the holy bark of God and an inner sanctuary. The floor rises, and the ceiling descends as the person moves further into the temple, this is done to remind you of the moment when the Egyptian universe was created from a pristine hill that rose from the endless waters of the flood.
